SHAKE, RATTLE, AND ROLL!:1950s DANCE CLASS
Friday, September 10 • 6–7 p.m.
FREE
Bring the family, a date, or yourself to the MSV and discover—or relive— the many dances made popular by songs in the 1950s. Many of these dances stemmed from the big band music of the 1940s. Then, Elvis and rock ’n’ roll arrived, enabling dancers to dance with or without a partner. Dance instructor Kay Teachout, owner of Kay’s School of Dance in Stephens City, will help dancers of all ages learn the twist, the stroll, the mashed potato, the jitterbug and more. Shake, rattle, and roll at this fun, FREE workshop on the Reception Hall patio and then head down to Gardens at Night to try out your dance moves!
Free to all. Registration not required. Rain location: MSV Reception Hall
GARDENS AT NIGHT: ROCKABILLY MUSIC
Friday, September 10 • 7–9 p.m.
$5
This special night in the gardens features two different performances that will celebrate 1950s rock ’n’ roll music. Dave Moore and his Hillbilly Huxters will open the night with high-energy roots rockabilly music the way it was played fifty years ago. Then, tribute artist Buck Stevens will perform Elvis’s earliest hits. Try out your 50s dance moves that you learned earlier in the evening (see listing above) or stroll the gardens. Several antique cars will be on display in the gardens and the performers will dress in vintage clothing and use vintage instruments, too! North Mountain Vineyard will be on site selling its delicious wines by the bottle/glass and Shaffers—a Shenandoah Valley favorite since 1952—will be in the gardens selling their famous pork barbeque, sandwiches, wraps, and non-alcoholic beverages. A limited number of chairs are provided (first-come, first-served) or you may bring your own.
Free to MSV Members and children under 6. All others: $5 Additional costs apply for food and wine purchases. No outside food or beverages in the gardens, please. Rain location: tent by MSV Reception Hall.
About the Gardens:
Six acres of spectacular gardens surround the Glen Burnie Historic House at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley. The gardens include everything from intimate garden rooms to a magnificent Grand Allée.
Created in the latter half of the twentieth century, the gardens include numerous fountains and other water features, sculpture, garden "folly" structures, and the historic Family Cemetery. A small Visitor Center presents the landscape's history and displays a fully furnished miniature of the Glen Burnie Historic House. Garden tours are self-guided. Stories in the Soil, an audio tour about the landscape surrounding the Glen Burnie Historic House is also available. The gardens are open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. March through November.
Tours of the historic house and gardens are free to MSV Members and children under 6. For all others, house and garden tour fees are $8 for adults and $6 for seniors and youth (7–18). Additional fees apply for gallery tours.
